Originally developed as a veterinary drug to help improve appetite and lean muscle mass in racehorses, Equipoise was marketed as Boldenone and approved for human consumption during the 60sand 70s. The FDA classified Equipoise as a synthetic cannabinoid and declared that there was never any human evidence for its use. The company was dissolved. The effects of Equipoise on humans can be quite different from a horse. When it goes wrong and a person is sprayed with the drug, they can become violently ill in a matter of minutes. They can also suffer from hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and in the worst cases, they may be paralyzed and die. Many have complained of dizziness, seizures, and convulsions. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 2,000 people died from equipoise-related drug overdoses and approximately 500 people were paralyzed in this manner. A recent New York Times article titled "How the Food Chain Ends" reported that the drug's primary ingredient in its human market had been banned from pet food a decade ago. After a decade of research, no human studies have demonstrated that equipoise can relieve chronic pain and other conditions. Unfortunately, the current use of equipoise continues to grow in popularity due to its ability to treat both chronic and acute conditions in horses. As a result there is currently a worldwide market for equipoise derivatives. The FDA estimates that between 75,000 to 100,000 horses may currently be on equipoise therapy throughout the U.S. and many states have enacted legislation permitting the use of equipoise derivatives in horses' food. There may be as many as 300,000 horses on equipoise therapy in the states if these studies are to be believed. The FDA also recommends that veterinarians inform clients of the risks, dangers, and consequences of equipoise therapy. As I wrote in my first article, equipoise will not help horses with chronic pain, seizures, hallucinations, or other symptoms associated with these conditions. The FDA has warned the public of this since the drug was first marketed in 1966. Equine veterinarians should first seek out qualified veterinarians who are familiar with the issue in order to determine the best treatment protocols for a specific horse. Equine veterinarians may also consult with other professionals or conduct additional research on a particular horse if need be. In all instances, equine veterinarians should advise clients of the dangers of equipoise or ask for a referral to a veterinarian who is knowledgeable of this treatment option.
